FIRE AT GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

A fire which • caused a good deal of concern to-night broke out in the Stamps Office at the back of the big Government Buildings, between Lamibiton Quay and Featherston. SH>ree|. There was a good deal ofsnioke, and as this was blown by the spulth-easterly wind right through! thle main buildings ■, the impression was that there was fire in the big building. Fortunately this was not i so. The building where the fire occurred) is an annexe to the main buildings. Fires had been going in. the fireplace® all day as usual, and it is evident ' that sparks," escaped from thle chimney and lodged between the roof and the ceiling. The patent fire alarmi worked' splendidly, indicalting innmediateJy throughout the whole of the buildings where the fire was located. The fire was got under control quickly, though the I annexe was practically gutted. The buildSng was used! for the Sftamps, Deathi Duties, Companies, and Provident Society, Registration Departments, and for the emibossing of stamps.. Any deeds owned by the public were locked in iron safes, and will be undamaged!. There will be considerabite inconvenience through! the destruction of documents, hub so far as. is known at the_j>resent, it is not thought, any papet of.. great importance has been burned.
