ANNUAL TOURNAMENT.
The annual tournament of the Mastertton Boxing Club was conclu- . ded' last ndgjht in the presence of a / good attendance. Some interesting ] contests were witnessed, tihe boxing ( on the wihole being of a higher standard than on the previous nliglit. Mr I. rake again abated as referee, and his decisions give general satisfaction. Following were the re- j suits:— I BANTAM. WEIGHTS. Final. G. Barr (Bst 31b) v. 0. Olsen (Bst 41b), both of Masterton.— Barr got in some good punches, both facial j and body, but he also received a fair , amount of rough handling. The ] champion (Barr) made the pace I very fast in the second round, and it took Olsen all his time to keep up. Olsen was better in the third round, but he again took a l)ot of hard hits. He found Barr Is face several times. Olsen again put up a game stand in the fourtih. round, . and the judge had to order an extra round. The last round proved too much for Olsen, who, although (plucky, w as tired by the severe facial blows delivered by Banr. Barr received the verdSat. Tihe referee stated afterwards that Olsen would have won the bout exceplt that he jkeplt on holding. I FEATHER WEIGHT. j Semi-final. j ■.. E. Miller*, Masterton (Sat 12lb) v. G. Ireland, Carterton (Bst 1011b.) The first round was an exMbitaon' of wild hitting, but very Ittle harm was done by either man. Ireland had the beslt of the second round, getting some punishing swingsi and straight lefts, and Ms footwork was good. Miller's right found its mark repeatedlLy in tihe third round, and Ireland was more successful with has straight left. The round was more even. Wild hitting followed in the last roundi, and MOier missed his mark almost every time. IreHand did all the hitting, and! the judge's decision was in hisi favour. Final. I G. Barr, Masterton (Sst 31b) v. G. I Ireland, Carterton (Sst 101b.) — Barr dad- i»wsitof'tihi6 figihjfaiMg.in the first round'. He dealt the "bigger man gome soundi Mows in the face. Ireland delivered a few body punches. In the second round Barr's footwork hel(ped him to evade some dangerous > former easily had) the bestt of the round. Ireland improved in the succeeding round., but Barr. still > maintained the upper hand. -The Carterton man suffered from face hits. Barr again made the pace, hot! in the last round), and downed has man twice for a few seconds. l Hhe s champion got a flattering reception upon the referee deciding in his favour. c ', LIGHT WEIGHT. j 1 - Semli-final. ] N. McLacWan, Masterton. (9st I 121b) v. O. Oadwallader, Oarterton (Sst 111b). The Masterton man got {home some good left swings, while t Oadlwallader retaliated wdMh a short <righft, one of which made a slight (wound on MoLachlan's left eye. McLadhilan did' all the leading, which was foiUlowed; up well by his opponent. Severe blows, were exchanged in the.first two rounds, but several opportunities were lost. In the third round MlcLachilan struck out with his left, but it landed too high. Just /before the gong sounded' a straight , leift nearly downed MoLachilan, but he made a good recovery. , The fourth round was l very willing and even, and a fifth round was* ordered by the referee. A grand set-to was . the result. McLachlan proved the .better man, and his victory was reoeivied with cheers. -.\ Final .. ! P. Redd, Oarterton (9st 121b) v. N. MoLachilan, Masterton (9st lOb.). —The Masterton man made good use of his left swing. Kieid got in his righlt, but the blows were mostly hlarmies9. Reid attempted an upper cut in the second round, but Mc- j Lachfflan guarded well. Nothing very , serious was done. The third, found | was very even, eadh' man getting in I a number of hats on tihie face. Mc- ,' Lac Man was twice knocked on to the ropes. Reid's form w-as bad in the last round, and r he suffered a severe handling. The Masterton man's victory was a popular one. MUDDLE WEIGHT. Final. C. Greelman. (list) v. V. Billington (llist), both, of Masteriton.— Ballington led out with terrific swings, which, were very annoying. The first round was in BiUnngton'© favour. Cu'eelmsan got in a straighlt left ocKiasionaily. In tftie" N second round, 'BLjing*on delivered) sbme 'heavy blftwß and sent has opponent on to the ropes in a dazed condition. The referee, stopped the bout, declaring Bililingtton the wanner. WELTER WEIGHT. Semi-final. H. Billington. (Masterton) 10s* 71b v. T. Ritchie (Tinui) lOst Sib.—Both men made use of swinging blow® in the- first round, which., although" fast, was l uninteresting. BiHington had the best of the second round. He has a fine right, which' found' hlis opponent's head. Ritchie got BiHington on the ropes at the closing stages of the second round, but the former's wild Mows were unsuccessful. This was followed' by a low hit by Ritchie, andi Billngton claimed a foul. The doctor substantiated the claim. The referee said the blow was unintentional, but lie had no option bait give the victory to Ballingiton. Final. T. MeLacMan (lflsb 71b) v. H. BiUingfcon (lOst 71b), both of Masterton.— In both of the first two rounds many blows were exchanged, ,biut they were not of much corasequence. BilJington daioked' to McLachlan's straight lefts. McLachlan boxed! wildly in the third round, thus losing many opportunities. Billington was apparently suffering from the blow he received at the
hands of Ritchie, for lie showed less vim in the la sit- round. MriL/ach- ! lan's long reacli also told! on him. I However, he held out gamely to th© ' end. MctLachlan won the bout. I HEAVY WEIGHT. J Final. ' T. Collerton (13st) v. Tas Smathr ' (12fiit 91b), both of Tinui.— Some heavy blows were exchanged in the first round. Smith, delivered his straight left, -co the face frequently* and Collerton retaliated with, a short right to the side of the head. Smith: j got some rough handling in tine second round. He was knocked on to the ropes for five seconds. Collerton found the face with, both hands. Smith gave in before the round concluded.
