MASTERTON BOXING CLUB
ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. The second annual tournament of the Masterton Boxing club opened in tlie Town Hall I&st night. There wias a very large attendance, of enthusiast l , (tihe i stage, in pantnoular, being crowded. The programme presented was undoubtedly thie best yet presented in It lie Wiairarapa. The competitors we in excellent form, and ithe spectators were treated with a first-class evening's sport. The referee, Mr I. J. Fiake, met tihe competitors before the. opening, and went .to conisideraibl© pains to give illustrations of foul hits,. EMar Fake's idea, of meeting the competitors before hand is entirely originial, and was highly appreciated by the listeners. Mr A. P. Whatman, President of the. Club, opened tine evening with a .short speech. Ho regretted that Dr .Napiea- McLean, was un®bl>a tto be present as'referee, but they had a! splendid Substitute in Mr Fake. The results of the contests are as follow: FEATHER WEIGHTS. Miller v. MeHugh.— The opening bout was betwe&n. E. Miller (Master*-1 ton) Bst 121b, and J. lucHiugh (Te i Wltjanau), Q&t 131b. In tihe first | round ithfe boxing was very willing < and wild, and some sound 1 Mow.® Were exchanged. Miller showed signs, of tiring. He improved in the second round, and floored his opponent, the gong sounding after two seconds ted been, counted. CVldllleir again started h'ard .in ttihe third round, and after inflicting several i sevieire Mows got in ia right swing and floored MoHugli for tihe seconds. Barr v. McCarthy.— G. Banr (Sat 31b) and j.. McCarthy (Bsrt 121b), both of Masterton, were the next to miee.t. This wais .a mone .soieaiitafi'O 1 bout, thie gjuardls of both being pair- j tioularly good. I 'Graham v. Ireland. : — The last bout in thie first a v ound was between. G. Graham, Ma.ste.rton (Bst 121b), and- G. Ireland, • Ireland very nea.rfv outed ihiiis mian at .thie close of the first round, ibut 'he lost ihis chance by failing ifco follow up his first iblow. The second round ,wa.s> uimiteiresting, but in tihe third Iboth got in isomie finished' left i swings. • In thie last round liJeland f boxed! wiiillingly, and inflicted severe faaiail blows, while Graiham wia® more suooesistfuli in ibodv punches. Graham , made good use of. the wild swings by his opponent, which ihe easily dodged, and gat in Ms blow. Graham won the verdict. LIGHT WEIGHT. McLaohian v. MoKimnon.— N. MaLachikin, Masterton, (9st 91b) and H. MicKinnon, Carterton. (9sit Hfflb), mist in the first match. of. the first round of the light weight con,test. The firs/t round w.a.s even and 1 willing. Heavy blows were. exchanged:, ) both receiving punishment. MoLachfon started oft' in the second round with heavy straight rights, and after a. few seoondls d'owmed Hiis man, who was counted out. J. Dunn v. CSadwallader.—The second bout in (the ligjht weight section was between J. Dunn, Tinui, (lOst), [ and 'O. Oadaviallader, Carterton )9st ; dllb). Thie, 'latter bad tihe best of the | first itwio 'TOUndls. mositly wient Ihtonue, while Dunn'si bl'owis weaie I dodged practically every tiime. Dunn gave m at the third! round, and tihe \ judge announced Cadlwialilad'er the victor. j CUDDLE .WEIGHTS. Oiieelmiaxii v. 'Reeve.— The .semifinal of the middle wteigHb seat ion j to.s (fought between,. C. Creeihnan, (Masterton), and W. Reeve (Te: Wh'arau). In the first round Reeve | did all the 'leading, but was cleverly dtodged' iby Creeknan. CtreeJiman proved very successful with hits straight leiflt in tihe second i J owid, while he received very little punishment. He amiused; tihe crowd by tihe <wiay in which he avoided Rteeve'si swings. The latter hit out frequently, but Ms, blloiwis seldom, found their mark. | •Reeve did satooeed in gettting in a few .in the last round, tout Ciieelmian was undoubtedly the best boxer, and the judge's idlecislion in his favour was received tamid prolonged applause. Bilington punciied waldly in the third round, and again floored 1 his opponent, who rose at .nine seconds.. In the fourth round Jensen wenlt down under a straight left, .and was counted out. Mr Flake declared Billiingiton the winner, and the latter wa,& floutKly appUlaudied. HEAVY WEIGHT. Weilchi v. Oollerton.— Tihe last contest of the evening was the final in the heavy weight section (between C l . Welch, Masterton. (12®t 41b) and T. Caller ton. Tinui (13st lib). The fight was started with a rapid exchange of hard blows, but 'both 3taeked science. Welch tired in the. second round 1 , and was dealt severely with iby his opponent. Welch recoveredi himself in. the rtihird round, and hield his own adaniraibly against Ithe heavier man. The fourth round was •very even, and the referee ordered another round. Thie final' was a great go. Welch tired, and in the last few seconds could barely resist the onslaughts of Oollerton. Form told in the end. The referee decided
in favour of Collerion, who was loudly cheered.
