The friends of Mrs J. Pybus, who ior many years resided in Masterton, will regret to hear of her death, which occurred at Invercargill last Sunday. Another old settler, Mr John Smith, died at Wakefield, Nelson, last Thursday, He came to New Zealand from Scotland sixty-one years ago, and took up land in the Nelson province, whera he lived un/til his death, at the ripe age of 88. He leaves a family of three sons and four daughters. Mr W. A. Quick, barrister and solicitor, a leading resident of Wellington of many years standing, died yes- 1 terday, after a long illness, aged 68 years. He .was director of the Bank of New Zealand and was for some time Chancellor of the Wellington Diocese, a .member of Victoria College Council, and a prominent Freemason. : ' The death occurred yesterday of an old resident of Petone in the person of Mr William -Inglis. Mr John Payne, of the ThompsonPayne Picture Proprietary, has anI nounced his candidature for GreyLynn (Auckland) as an Independent Labour candidate at the coming general election. At the Wellington Presibytery meeting on Tuesday the following were appointed representatives to the General Assembly, to be held in Dunedin in November:—The Revs. Douglas, A. Thomson, J. M'Caw, E. C. Tennent. I L. Thompson, A. T Thompson, J. C: Mill, W. J. Oomrie and Dr. Gigg, and elders from the sessions of Kelbourne, Kent Terrace, Khandallah, South Wairarapa, St. Andrew's, and Masterton. ' 1 Inspector Seed will arrive in Ma-s----j terton from Wellington to-day, to inI speot the local branch of the St. .John | Ambulance Brigade, in the Dominion I Hall, at 8 o'clock. | Another of the pioneer settlers of this Dominion has passed away in th© I person of Mr Robert Fairweatiier, whose death occured in Masterton yesterday, &t the residence of his son, Mr Hubert E. Fairweather. The deceased gentlettoan. who was 63 years of age at the time of his death, had been ailinc for some time. He was born in the Hutfc Valley, and had some varied experiences during the Maori war. He leaves wife and one son to raourx? their krs. The funeral will leave the residence" of Mr Hubert Fairweather at three o'clock this afternoon for the Masterton Cemetery. A pleasing funotion took place yesterday afternoon at the office of Messrs Dalgety and Co.. Ltd., Masterton, the occasion being the presentation of a nair of silver entree dishes to Mr B. V. Skeet, in view of his approaching marriage. Mr Skeet was for many years a member of the Masterton staff of the firm, and has recently been acting as their ma na line: a erent at Martinborough.. Mr J. B, Moodie, manager. made the presentation, ip a few well-chosen words, Mr Skeet suitably responding.
