HON. G. FOWLDS.
It is' abundantly dear that, however march the Budget of the Prime Minister may have tackled the ears of the unsophisticated, it has not impressed the Hon. George Fowldls-, wftno reoentQly retired from the Ministry. Interviewed at Auckland, Mr Fbwßs stated that the "adhesion of the people, when attracted by hope of gain instead of love of principle, hlad a paralysing effect upon a party." The obvious deduction to be dlrawai from these words is that the Ministry, instead of adopting fixed principles, is endeavouring to attraot tihe people by offering them bribes. It is a lamentable thing thlat politics shouldl be reduced to such a low ebibj but the foot is tihere, and! it is impossible for one to Hind: his eyes to it. The resignation of Mr Fowlds, as a ptroteist against'such, a policy, will, it is hoped, result in a speedy reform, in our Parliamentary institutions.
