ANNIVERSARY SERVICES.
Tile services in connection with tihe third! anniversary of tihe Congregational Chwnqh' were all very well attended yesterdlay. . The Rev. W. A. Evans, firom thie Constable Street Qhutrchj Welling&on, occupied the pulpait morning, afternoon and l evening. Special hymns were sung, and special anthems- were excellently rendered by a full choir. In the afternoon the service whs devoted to Itihle young people, Mir Evans giving ian illumdnating addpesa on the siulbjec't of "Hhe Cfongregjational Church." In tlhe evening the subject of the preacher's address \ wias based on the words to be found in John 1., Chapter 4, verse 70: "Because a® he is, so even are we in ftMsi world." In the course of a very eloquent and inspiring sermon:, Mir Evans said that the mostt noticeable work of every truly great man is found to be that he brought God nearer to man, he helped men to. Ibear their burden®, audi to live nearer to tihe ideal set by CJhrisit thian ItJhtey would h&ve dbne without his aid'. TtThfis', said tihe preacher, is thie secret of real' greatness. Again, jMSri Evans stated l as a fact thlat the great majority of people are content, iby a bondl of senti menttaJism., to cover, up their siims, penswading themselves that theyare rid of tiheirt rather than allowing the Davihe Spirit to operate, which is the only way in wMch sin can be Teally destroyed.
