SIR WILLIAM STEWARD.
The retirement from active politics of Sir W Llliani Jukes .Steward, the nestor of the House of Representatives, wliE be regretted by a large section of the comnmnity. Thie mamlber far Wlaiibaki, although a follower of the Government, possesses miany of the qualities which go to 1 make ia isitatesmian. He- is, possibly, one of the ■most and abdle politicians on Biiis. .sd.de of thie. Housie. He has striven for years to .secure a reform in Parliamentary procedure, ■and it ils almost pathetic that ho , i&hould retire whan th© country is becoming .ripe for the reform which he (has .so. ardently advocated. He will almost certainly be given a sieat in the. Legislative Council, where he should prove a useful imemher until that body is mlade elective. In tQie meantime, .it iis more than probable that Sir John Findiay will contest the .Wiaitlaki seat.
