TE WHARAU.
] Heavy rains were experienced hero { at the beginning of the week, followed by gales. The rains did much good, and the country is looking well, as is also stock generally. Most of the .sheep stations report excellent lambing up to the present. 1 The coming season shows every prospect of being a good one, as far as the I worker is concerned, as, besides the usual station and farm work, which rinds employment for a large number of men during the summer months, large areas of scrub are likely to be felled, while road formation and metalling will also give employment to quite a number. The Te Wharau Rifle Club will open the season's shooting on Saturday, when challenge and other trophies will be shot for. Under the management of the newly appointed secretary, who takes a real live interest m shooting matters the Te Wharau Club should •have a highly successful season. Te Wharau bore quite a military appearance on Thursday last, when the stalwart Territorials of this district presented themselves for examination before Dr Cook and Sergeant-Major McCristell. Those examined bore the appearance of men who will make ex-f cellent soldiers, and the majority are vp.ry enthusiastic over the future of New Zealand. Mr Ivans, stock and rabbit inspector, visited this district last week, and reports that a large amount of work has been done during the winter in combating the rabbit pest. Winter poisoning has been ea,rried out in several places, and with very good results. Messrs Perry. Co-oper, , Stevens, Moore, Douglas and Barrer, South Wairarapa County Councillors, accompanied by the County Engineer, visited Te Wharau on Thursday, and inspected the proposed deviation of the Masterton—Te Wharau road at Jackson's Creek, wihich has been causing the travelling public a good deal of inconvenience. If the proposal is put through, the distance to Te Wharau will be somewhat increased, but possibly the proposed new road will be less dangerous than the present one.
