A Brisbane cable announces the sudden death of Mr Cot-tell, a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly.

A farewell social was tendered to Mr A. McLeod, on Tuesday evening, by the employees at the Masterton gasworks, where he has been employed for the past four years. Mr McLeod leaves to-morrow to take up his residence in Wanganui. During the evening Mr E. O'Leary, on behalf.of the staff, presented the .guest with a travelling rug, and the recipient suitably responded. Songs were sung by several gentlement present, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr James MoArley, of Masterton, has been appointed instructor of the sheep-shearing class at the Napier Technical School.

The Hawke's Bay Herald of yesterday says:—Mr and Mrs Beard, senr., Mrs Moore,, arid Mr Gerald Beard, who have been on a holiday visit to Napier, return this morning by motor car to Masterton.

Miss Eleanor F. Peyman, formerly of Napier and Wanganui, has been appointed matron of the Sydney Homeopathic Hospital. For the past three months Miss Peyman has been head nurse in that institution, and has been appointed by tho board to fill the vacant matronship. Mr J. A. Valentine, headmaster of Timaru Main School; has been elected to the seat on the Teachers' Superannuation Board rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr T. Hughes, who represented the South Island contributors. There were two nominations— Mr Valentine, who polled 52-5 votes, and Mr A. E. Just, of the Lyttelton District High School, who polled 521 votes.

, There died at the Palmerston Hospital on Monday one of the Maori war veterans, Mr Isaac Kent, aped 70. Ho served several years in the early sixties in the Hawke's Bay Military Settlers under Major Fraser, and saw considerable service on the East Coast during those stirring times. Deceased leaves a widow' and family.

Mr Edward .Darby, an old resident of Auckland, died on Friday after a short illness. He is the last of the Darby family of three brothers (Patrick, JoMn, and Edward) and two sisters (Mrs Barkins and Mis Shields). He leaves two children, both in the teaching profession, Mr E. J. Darby, of Russell, and Mrs I. M. K. Brown, of Tuapaki. His wife predeceased him by five yearß. Mr Alex. McLeod, of Masterton, who is leaving here on account of ill health, has tendered his resignation as president of the Welington Branch of the Shearers' Union. The appoint-* ment of his successor will be considered at a meeting ta be held at an early, date. ..-..,

Mr H. A. Nevins, of Tinui, Masterton, is at present attending a meeting of the New Zealand Sheepowners' -Federation in Wellington.' Mr Stanley Benton, of Kaiwaiwai, left on a trip to Auckland on Monday. His marriage to Miss Lily Jensen will take place in the northern city at the end of this week.

At a meeting of directors of the New Zealand (Farmers' Dairy Union on Monday, Mr T. Parsons, of Eketahuna, was re-elected chairman. All present spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Parsons's past work, and his loyalty to the company.
