PERSONAL.
Mr Robert Lee was yesterday reelected Chairman of the Wellington Education Board. Mrs F. C. Lewis, of Masterton, underwent a rather delicate operation for an affection of the throat, at Wellington yesterday. The present year is the jubilee of the settlement in New Zealand of Sir W. R. Russell. Mr Redmond Barry, K.C., M.P. for North Tyrone, has, according to a London oable, been appointed , Irish Chancellor. A London oable states that it is officially announced that Bishop Gore, of Birmingham, has been transferred to Oxford. Sergeant Miller, who has been in charge of the Masterton police force for some years, has been promoted to the rank of senior sergeant. Mr J. B. Foss, brother of Mr Reginal Foss, of the Upper Plain, lias been, appointed teacher at the Mungapakeha school. The resignations were yesterday received and accepted by the Wellington Education Board of Miss Adnsworth, sole teacher at Rakanui, and Miss Lock, sole teacher at Wangaehu.
Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P.. is at present suffering from an acute form of rheumatism in the leg, ! which renders locomotion a matter of some difficulty. Leave of absence has been granted to Mr Jackson, assistant .teacher at the Mangatainoka school; Mrs Robbie, teacher at Waterfalls: - and Miss Broadbent, assistant at Carterton., Mr R. Ai Large has been appointed buyer for Messrs W. Dimock and Co., Ltd., in the Wairarapa, in conjunction with Mr Abbott. Mr Large will reside at Lansdowne, whilst Mr Abott will take up his residence at Carterton. A very pleasant function took place at Mr C. F. Yallance's Kahumingi station on Monday evening, when The employees of the station presented Mr J. Horton (late of Kahumingi, now pf Horton's, Ltd., Hastings) with a handsome easy chair and a of pipes on the occasion of his marriage". Mr F. B. Vallance, who presided, called on Mr F. H. Todd to miake, the presentation, which was done and Buitably replied to' by Mr, Horton. Songs and sentiments followed, and a really pleasant evening was spent. The toasts honoured were the guest of the evening, and Mr and Mrs C. F. Y&flance and family. Songs were contributed by Messrs H. H. Smith, S. Bracewell, G. Prickett, H. Collins.. A military two-step was given by Mr S. Bracewell, who kept the company in roars of laughter, and an Irish jig by Mr P. O'Oallaghan was greatly appreciated. Three hearty cheers were given for the chairman, "Good Save the King" being isung by the company as a wind-up to a very pleasant evening.
Mr H. H. Welters, whose retirement from the position of County Clerk for South Wairarapa was announced yesterdlay, has filled that important position for over 30 years. During that lengthy period he has, with his special knowledge and skill, been a useful officer to * the various Councils under whicji. he has served'. Originally the district was divided into the counties of Wiairarapa Bast and West, and the alteration'of the bound*, aries necessitated a great deal of technical work, which-fell upon Mr goiters, and he carried the important-de-tails through with every satisfaction to those concerned. He was also instrumental in promoting many " important amendments to the Counties Act. During thin period, Mr Woltefs found time to undertake many public duties. He was for many yearn Town Clerk. Secretary of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society, a steward of the Taratahi. Racing l ; Club, Chairman'of the Carterton library Committee, and - always to the fore : n the promotion of any-movement having for its object the advancement of tho town and district, notably co-op-erative dairying. Mr Wolters is stil' halo and hearty, and his many friend* will wish him many years of health and strength to continue hi? private business.
