(By Tdlegraph—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Last Night
The fifth hockey Shield match w&3 played on Saturday, at Bay's Bay, When Wellington defeated Nelson by six goals to four. The weather conditions were splendid. The game was disappointing as a display of scientific hockey. Wellington had not taken the challenge seriously, and were not in a state of preparation. Accordingly their play wafi not a/t its best. Nieflson played very well individually, but they lacked combination; and were generally inexperienced. Wellington won the toss, and the visitors had to play against the sun; Nelson made the first score in twenty seeonds.for which Whftwell was responsible: The first spell ended—Nelsori 3, '"Wellington '2. Wellington eoorejij first in the <sfecond and; the play was spirited. ■ Several good rushes Eventuated, -but Nelson were only aole to add one, more goal to fheir score. Wellington ran their score up to" six, and when the whistle sounded, the pace was faster than at any stage in the game. Messrs Carver and Falconer were *he referees. .- .
On the Carterton Showgrounds, on Saturday afternoon, a Wairarapa team defeated Wellington B M who played two emergencies, by three goals" to nil. Wairarapa had the best of the jjpme throughout, and. had the sW>fting been v anywhere up to the standard the local team must have won by over six goals. 7 * . Frem the. start of the game Wairarapa showed brilliant' combination.
and the forwards got into the circle. Fisher put one into the net, but was awarded off-side. The blacks continued the onslaught, but many opportunities were missed through erratic shooting. Eventually L. Boyd got possession from outside the circle, and, dribbling up, shot a well judged goal, and was greatly applauded by the onlookers. At this stage the game looked to be an easy win for Wairarapa; but the yellows initiated a forward ruch, which landed them in thenopponents' circle. The local backs, however, who were playing a beautiful defensive game, sent the yellows back to defend their goal. L. Boyd scored the second goal shortly before half time, and the spell ended with the blacks still pressing. ,In t<he second half Wellington greatly' improved their play, and Wairarapa were kept busy jooking after their goal. Morgan, the black's goalkeeper, saved a hot shot by kicking the ball out. The blacks carried play to the yellow's territory, wihere R. Williams missed a fairly easy shot. Shortly afterwards the same player scored the final goal, and even play resulted throughout the rest of the snell. For the winners, Fisher and L. Bovd (forwards), and N. Boyd, W. William's, and Morgan (backs) played best, and for the losers Organ and .Ellis (forwards) and L. Davies, C. Davies, and J. Cameron (backs.)
WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON,
This game was also played at Carterton and was the best game of the two. Wairarapa played with four emergencies, caused by the Martinborough members of the team mistaking the starting time. Wairarapa were unfortunate in not scoring eral times, but the Wellington goalkeeper played a magnificent game, nothing getting past him. The game ended in favour of Wellington by two goals to nil. scored by Bennett. and Tewsley. For Wairarapa, C. Ordish, 'Bambry and N. Fly in the forwards, and N. Ellis and A. Dixon (Wo senior men playing as emergencies) in the backs, were the pick of the home team.
