DESPERATE BURGLARS
AFFRAY IN WINNIPEG,

OTTAWA, August 24.
A policeman acqpsted three housebreakers at daylight in a back street of Winnipeg. The latter fired and wounded the policeman mortally. Another policeman was engaged with revolvers.
All three were finally captured, when their revolvers were empty.
A SOUTH AFRICAN PROBLEM

Mr Baron, Minister of Native Affairs, in the course of an interview, characterised as false the contention that white unskilled labourers cannot be employed, owing to their cost, when sugar is selling at £l9 per ton. He argued that reliance on native labour for everything -was keeping the country back.
.. He predicted a great white immigration to South Africa.
THE NEW HEBRIDES

SYDNEY, August 24. The Rev. Paton, a well-known missionary, and Dr. Bowie, superintendent of the Amdrim Hospital, have arrived from the New Hebrides. Both state that the condominium is a howling farce and a failure. The British keep the law, but the French do not. Both agree that none of the tprevioua reports were in any way exaggerated. The "entente cordiale" was humbug so far as the New Hebrides were concerned. The residents call the Oourt at Vila a bazaar, and go there for amusement. The proceedings are so funny that people take their lunch with them and stay there all day. Dr. Bowie is going direct to the British Foreign Office with a definite charge, supported by documents.

CANADIAN POLITICS

OTTAWA, August 24. Mr Joseph Martin, Liberal member of the Imperial Parliament for St. Pancras East, is campaigning in favour of reciprocity. ' Mr: Clifford Siffcrin, an ex-Minisfer. who is campaigning in Ontario, pointed out that Australia aud Argentina were putting meats and dairy products on the Canadian market despite the duty. When the duty
was entirely removed the Canadian farmers' prosperity would go with it.

While aeroplaning over Laffan's Plain, Cody's petrol tank burst from its fastenings. The aviator, with his right hand, prevented it falling and steered with 'his left hand for twenty miles, when he landed safely.
