THE REFERENDA.

(Received August 23, 10.35 a.m.)

SYDNEY, August 23. The Labour Conference laughed out the, motion that Mr Holman and Mr Beeby be expelled from the move* ment. Speaking on the motion censuring members who did not support the referendum, Mr Hughes and others failed to arous© enthusiasm. Mr Holman, replying, attacked Mr Hughes, and declared that three of the matters out of the five covered in the referendum proposals were not in the Labour platform and were not binding on the members of the Party. He contended that , the State Party was not bound to follow the Federal Party in matters not in the platform. Mr Holman's remarks were greeted with cheers. After the Conference had adjourned, Mr Holman stated that the Government had every reason to be pleased at the attitude adopted.
