A BIRTHDAY SOCIAL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Sir James Carroll 'was tendered a complimentary social to-night, the occasion being his 54th birthday. He received an address accompanied by 4,675 [Signatures (this number will be" made up to 7500). Sir James was also the recipient of encomiums ifrom feeveral public men, and in reply he stated that words failed to express whaifc he felt on. the receiving of such expressions cf goodwill on the occasion- of his birthday. It required all the fortitude An Ms possession to refrain from exhibiting weaknessi, whilst listening to the expressions of goodwill he had heard. "I will never," he concluded, "forfeit your esteem and regard."
