LATEST STRIKE NEWS.
The new® contained in this morning's cables concerning the railway strike is not by any means re-assuring. It would iseem that already nearly a quarter of a. million men are on strike, and that the number is likely to increase to-day. The effect upon trade will be most depressing, and, unless a settlement is .speedily arrived at, hunger will drive men and women to desperation. The Government, with the assistance, of the military, as making a determined effort to keep the sources of the food supply
open; but, without tho aid of over- j seas shipping, this will be impossible.
