THE SHOPS ACT.
; In reference to an inquiry made by < a Masterton tradesman concerning a certain shop remaining open on Thursdays, it may be mentioned that clause'll, isub-section 2, of the Shops and Offices Act, 1908, reads:—"Provided that in the event of any day .other thai* Saturday ibeing appointed as ,tlie statutory closing day, then any occupier shall be entitled to close his ahop on Saturday in lieu thereof on giving to the Inspector during the j month of January in each yearjv or within ono month/after a shop is first , opened for business, as the case may I be, notice in writing of his desire so ! 'to do." An amendment to this Act [came into force on December 3rd, i 1910, omitting the words "during the i month of January in .each year, or | within one month after a. shop is first opened for business, as' the case may be," As the law now stands, any 1 shopkeeper may, on igivine notice to l the Inspector, keep his premises open | on any-Thursday, provided he closes ion the Saturday of 'that week.' In the case referred to by a Masterton tradesman, the Inspector of Factories states, that the proper riotide had been .given. . , .........
