( Many tributes are paid by the press and public men to. the late Cardinal Moran as a great churchman, administrator and statesman, and numerous messages of sympathy have been received. ! The Government as a mark or respect, issues a special black-bordered i Gazette. By the death of Cardinal Moran, Archbishop Kelly, who was appointed his coadjutor, succeeds him as Archbishop of Sydney. This does not mean of itself that lie will become a Cardinal, that resting entinrely with the Pope. THE STEAD INTERVIEW. (Received August 17, 8.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 17. Sir William McMillan, in an address before the Britislh Empire League, referred to the Stead interview, and said that they had not to consider whether the-sentiments therein expressed emanated either from Mr Fisher or from Mr Stead, but whether, coining from a public man, such sentiments should lie condemned. The sooner belief in the loyalty of Australians to the Empire was re-established the better. THE POPE. (Received August 17, 11.10 a.m.) ROME, August 16. The Pope's condition is unchanged. Cardinal Moran's death has not been communicated to him, as it is feared" that the shock might have a bad effect. THE VETO BILL. (Received August 17, 10.30 a.m.) ADELAIDE, August 17. The Assembly adopted the Premier's motion congratulating Mr Asquith -on the passage of the Parliament Bill. The Leader of the Opposition expressed doubt as to the wisdom of interfering in t'he bitter party politics of England. TAHI KAKA. 1 .'(Received August 17,11.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 16. Truth, in alleging that the New Zealand Government hastened Tahi Kaka's execution wlhen a petition for reprieve was privately by mistake i cabled to London, suggests that the Prerogative would be better in other hands than tliose of the New Zealand Government.
