The Pall Mall Gazette says that Mr Fisher's remarks at Melbourne, as cabled, are as sound as anyone need desire. His statement concerning defence and the Japanese Alliance were particularly important.

Whether Mr Stead mistook the word, or used it for his own purpose he did not know, but lie regarded Mr Stead as a dangerous man. . The second clause to which he took exception was that in relation to "hauling down the ; flag." That was entirely anemana- | tion from Mr Stead's imagination. He j (Mr Fisher) admitted receiving proofs j of the interview from Mr Stead, but I owing to pressure of business he had to leave the work of attending to such things in his secretaries' hands. :
