THE ENGLISH STRIKES

LONDON, August 13. A general resumption of work is expected on, Monday. Although there are a number of misunderstandings in regard to the precise terms of agreements, factories are re-opening. The railway carters declare that the awards did not affect them. The carters of the five principal railway companies have struck, and great unrest prevails in other avocations, and numerous small strikes have occurred. There is virtually military rule in Liverpool. Large quantities of provissions blocked at Edgehill station were released by the military. Hundreds of lorries, many driven by the merchants themselves, and escorted by the Scots Greys and Warwickshires, obtained possession of tho produce. The strikers were undemonstrative.

The week's" strike has, roughly, cost London £1,500,000. A thousand window-cleaners have struck. The situation at Manchester is grave. Eight thousand goods railway men have ceased work, and five hun-s dred porters and cleaners struck today. The men have no particular grievance, but are acting out of sympathy with others. The Liverpool butchers are closing owing to the meat famine. The cotton industry is seriously affected. ,

At- Glasgow, striker.? detached a trolley wire and smashed a number of cars. Twenty strikers were arrested. A partial service is being maintained, the inspectors and otner officials, under \a police guard, working the trams.

THE SUGAR STRIKE

SYDNEY, August 14

Strike matters are quiet. Both sides are awaiting the details of, the Brisbane Conference.

The steamer Mintaro, with two thousand tons of sugar aboard, arrived, and, after being, a couple of hours at the wharf, was ordered to ostensibly to take in buhker coalf.;-Nq attempt was.made; to discharge the sugar.

MELBOURNE, August 14

Mr Hughes has- received a. telegram to the effect that the conference has arrived at an agreement. The/Conference' meets again to-night. Mr Fisher declines to discuss the suggested remission of the Customs duty on sugar...,.-. '

BRISBANE, August 14

Excitement prevails at.Mackay.: A crowd of a thousand strikers scoured the town for free labourers, severely chastising them when they were caught. ..A policeman protecting a free labourer was .struck. with a stone.
