REDUCING THE EXPENSES.

AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW. (Received Last Night, 10.20 o'clock.) LONDON, August 10. Mr George von L. Meyer, Secretary of the United States Navy, is visiting England with a view to obtaining information which will enable his Government to reduce the expenses of the American navy yards to the English level. The Right Hon. R. McKenna, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Admiral Sir A. K. Wilson are assisting him in his investigation. In the course of an interview', Mr Meyer stated that he was much inter ested in the Dominion navies which had been visited by the State fleet. Australasia, he said, gave a great imoetus to the desire for an Australianbuilt and •an Australian-manned squadron. He did not agree that Australia might have a difficulty in manning her warships. America did not try to find sailors. Sho looked for bright, active youths, and trained 'hem.
