MASTERTON COUNTY.

THE ENGINEER'S REPORT

The folowing report was presented by the Engineer (Mr D. McLachlan) at the Monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday:— OPAKI RIDING.— Upper Plain Road. —Contract No. 2(33: 43 chains of footpath and sidewidth formation. The above contract was practically completed on f>ih inst.. there being a little stone picking and I rolling to be peformed during the month's maintenance. While the contractor was on the ground I took advantage of his team for ploughing the high edges outside the metal width between the school and Mr R. Dagg's gate, Avith a view to using the grader to improve the drainage of the road. Metal repairs to the weaker portions of the Fernridge road haye been made j from the broken stone on hand; i Carrerthen Street. —Contract No. ) 266 : 6.33 chains of road formation and i footpaths.—The formation is completed with the exception of some rolling which the contractor undertakes to do when the eround is sufficiently drv. Northern Approach. —Bridge Building: Contract No. 237.—Practically"', nothing has been done since last meeting on this work. I have been in communication with the timber suppliers who are expecting the shipment any day. Contract No. 238.—26* chains of formation.—'Fair progress has been made during the workable weather on this contract. It is necessary to pub a small stone groin above the ford on the Northern bank., on Mr Hirschberg's frontage, and prevent tro?ion j and encroachment which is taking | place,—aproximate 'cost £lO. I King Edward Street. —With reference to tho culvert complained of by the petitioners, this matter has been before the Council on a. previous occasion arid dealt with. A. culvert was put in, at a cost of about £B, cutting off a great portionjof the water then complained of. I have nothing further to add to my original report. The culvert is in a depression and is required, unless an extensive alteration in the grade of the road is affected the water cannot be diverted. I would, however, point out that a small lOin drain (for a. length of 5 chains), along the boundaries... oj:the properties complained of to the main road would affect a perfect drainage and abate the nuisance. Aproximate cost'£2.' In the event of thsi being carried out I would recommend the Council to put in a culvert connecting the drain with the main road. I would further point out that the original purohaser. of the aero lot into which the culvert discharges bought tho land with the existing disadvantage, and it has since been subdivided into small lots, making no provision for cutting off the water. It appears to be a case in which the petitioners should assist in mitigating the nuisance.

RANGITUMAU RIDING.— To Ore Ore-Bideford Road.—Contract No. 262: Delivering 395 cubic yards of metal has been completed. Masterton-Waimata Road. —A weak portion of this road on each side of the Ruamahanga bridge has been repaired. UPPER TAUERU RIDING.— .. I .Mangarai Road.-r-Contract No. < 248: 41 chains of formation and cul- I verte;—The-work has been taken off the contractor's hands, There are, however, some extensive slips on this section since completed. Glendpnald-Wairere > Road.—Contract No. 250: 68 chains of formation. The contractor reports having gob most of the timber on to the ground! Tho weather being very broken, small , progress was made with the earthwork. WAINUIORU RIDING.— Blairlogie-East Coast Road. —In consequence of slips, following the recent rains, the abovo road was closed to wheel traffic for a few days, but is now open. ALFREDTON RIDING.— Alfredton-Weber Road.—Small slips occurred following the heavy rains, but were cleared away with little interruption to the traffic. A 4ft by 4ft culvert on the Castle Hill Road, about 2 miles from the post office, is in a state of collapse, and will need to be renewed.
