Miss Ci Kemsley has been appointed sole teacher at tho Tablelands school. Captail Bendall, one of the most familiar figures in the marcantile marine at Wellington, died yesterday at the age of eighty. Mrs H. A. Dempsey, mother of Mr W. H. Dempsey; postmaster at Pahiatua, died at Wellington yesterday. She arrived with her parents in the ship Suge in 1857. Mr A. Blackmore, who was stationmaster at Mauriceville ior some years, is to succeed Mr J. T. Quinn as stationmaster at Pahiatua. Mr James Austin, of the Petone sawmilling firm, Bailey, Austin, and Arcus, has been appointed manager of the New Plymouth Sash and Door and Timber Company. Mr H. Crowther, Collector of Customs, Westport, who has been an officer of the Department since 1567, intends to retire on superannuation at the end of August (says the Westport (Times.) A cable received from Fremantle Jast night stated that Madam Melba was a passenger from London by the Osterley.

A resolution of sympathy was passed by the Wellington Presbytery yesterday with the Rev. J. Paterson, senior minister of St. John's, in his recent bereavement through the death of Mrs Paterson.
