THE MOKAU ESTATE.
The 'statement mad© m th© House of Repi-eiSientatiiv.es yesterday by Sir James Cari - 011, throws some little light iipon itihe''transaction over th© Mokau ©state. It does not rid the Government of its responsibility for tin© .hug© blunder which lias, been committed. On lt.be ishowin'g of Sir James Carroll himself, th© Government 'had the night to acquire this land on certain conditions. These conditions ®eem to have frightened the Government. They did .not, however, deter a private syndicate, which hopes to make thousands l of pounds out of .tli© fcrauDsaotioni. Tine point ait issue is this: If th© Mokau ©sltiate, with the ansk attaching to it, if any, was good enough for a syndicate to acquire, why was it not good enough for the* Government ? The statement mad© by Sir James Carroll 'has ©©en referred to the Native Affairs Committee, consisting almost lenifciffeirjr of
Government members, for a report. It is needless tio speculate as to what the finding: will be. Vne tribunal will not satisfy th© country.
