A London cable states that Mr Dudley Stagpoole, who won the Victoria Cross in New Zealand in 1863, has jt*st died in a London workhouse. The death is announced by cable of the Right. Bev. Dr. Paget, Bishop of Oxford. The deceased, who was born in 1851, was the second son of Sir James Paget, Bart. He had been Bishop of Oxford since 1901. Mr G. J. Bruce, who was for many years a resident of the Palmerston' district, and who contested the Waihemo seat with the late Sir John McKenzie in 1890, was one of the principal performers in the New Zealand scene in the Empire Pageant at the Crystal Palace. Mr Bruce has been managing ainewspaper at Bangkok, in Siam, for some time. ; Mr Matthews' of Wairongomai, gave an address before the Dannevirke A. and P. Association this week on the history and qualities of Rom-ney-Marsh sheep. A quiet but pretty wedding took ( place last Tuesday at the residence of Mr H. W. Leach, Tiraumea, Alfred- j ton, when Miss Ellen Agnes Leach j was married to Mr George Henry Leach, of Akitio. Mr A, W. Leach, .brother of the bride acted as best man, and the bridesmaid was Miss Leach, sister of the bride. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. A. T. : Sir Robert Stout; Chief Justice, will probably deliver an address,.in Jynpx Hall, Masterton', next month. Another of New Zealand's , earliest; pioneers has just passed away at Auckland in the person of Mrs, Margaret Strong. The deceased lady, who -was 86" years of age, arrived in Auckland i in the early 'forties. Her husband, \ whom she survived by about sixteen years, was an officer in the First j Coast Guards, and saw troublesome times in the Maori war. A well-known figure in Reefton for many a year^—Mr Matthew Absalomis dead. Deceased, who was sixty-two years ,of age, came out in the early days, and had been intimately connected with mining even since. Mr Sidney Scott, who had been a resident of Wellington for many years, died somewhat-suddenly at the .Club Hotel, Lambton Quay, yesterday morning. The deceased was born at Derby, England, fifty-six years ago, and came out to' Wellington thirty-five years since. . > Mr R.
