UNUSUAL PROSECUTION.
In. ilw Wellington Magistrate's Court tlnig week an unusual prosecution, probably -unique the world over, is likely to be heard. The case is being taken against a settle.-, and arisen out of the sale of an area <;r 1400 acres- of Crown land 1: the Rangitdkei district. It is 'alleged that an attempt was made to ''bjixr-' the market, and the defendant < t-j ficharged,.wit!h Hiavamg -offered to accept a.'4»ibe i{£. This is an offence under section (;0 cf the Land Act-, -1908, which lays down that -a person who offers to ta£e a bribe to ■(refrain/ from, bidding in a ';Ciwvini; laadfi/ <i>ifltdon.' tsir-! a '^Q' t '> .'a pesialty aiot exoeeddnjg £IOO, or 12 moiiit'his' dmprisoauwen/t is the alternative. For accepting a brihi under sdmilar circumstances the maximum penalty is £2OO or two ye-ar-.' imprisonment.
