Mr Quinn's numerous friends will \,spleased to hear of his preferment. Mrs P. B. Fraser, wife of the superintendent of the home mission work of tho Presbyterian Church of New I Zealand, died at Feilding last week. Mr Laracy, Secretary of the New Zealand Shearers' Federation, was in Masterton on Saturday. He leaves for Wellington to-day. Mr D. H. Rait, M.R.C.V.S., who lectured in Masterton on Saturday, returns to Palmerston North to-day. Mr John Hessey, who has been on a. fortnight's visit to the South Island, returned to-Masterton on -Saturday nighj>. Mr Hessey willx Masterton on Wednesday for Dunedin.

The death occurred in Auckland last week of Mr H. A. Whelch, who was for some years a draper in Masterton. The deceased, who had been ailing for some time, leaves a widow and three daughters. Mr Francis McParland, licensee of the Hotel Cecil, died in Wellington on, Saturday at the age of seventy-six years. Tho deceased was an ex-chair-man of the Wellington Licensed Victuallers' Association.

The death occurred last week of Mr J. W. Emmerson, of Waverley, at the age of 46. For some years deceased had been suffering from a painful internal disease, and had undergone several operations, but these gave only temporarily relief. He was secretary of the Waverley-Waiototara Racing Club and the Waverley A. and P. Association, and also a member of the Waverley Town Board. Deceased leaves a widow and four young children.
