MAURBCEVSLLE WEST.
A succession of frosts, the hardest: for many years past, has followed on the stormy conditions of last week.
An earthquake shock was felt here a little after midnight on Friday night. Mr R. Brooks passed through here last week for t.l>" purpose of obtaining names for the electoral roll. The fortnightly as-embly was held in fho old tschool on Saturday night. Avhen about fifty couples took th» floor. The next dance takes place on Saturday, 29th. It is interesting to note how tho energetic, dairy farmers take advantage of the winter months, when the cows are dry, to do little necessary improvements to their farms. Building, hedge-cutting, draining, stumping, scrub-cutting, etc., are all to bo seen going ahead merrily in this locality. ,
TE W"4'RAU.
Five' successive frosts, 4 more or less' severe, have been experienced here during the past week, constituting .i record in this part of the country. Farmers think that the frosts will have a good effect, as the grubs, whicli were so prevalent last year, owing to the wet winter, will be considerably diminished. % Mr Leei held his fortnightly woolclass on Tuesday, and was congratulated by all on his splendid performances at tho recent competitions in Masterton. Owing to the programme being full, the Te Wharau representatives did •not compete at the Qarterton Boxing Tournament. Mr W. Reeves's two bovs, however, gave an exhibition of boxing, which was splendidly received by the audience. The extension on the Rocky Hill road which, has been going on for the last month or two. is just about completed. Mr W. Reeves is the contractor.
To Whavau has lately been interested in a somnambulist whose peculiar tendency it is to mter empty rooms in a house while accusants are asleep, and strew on the'road the various articles of apparel which he may lay his hands on. He is perfectly harmless, but none the less annoying. Mr Harding, Government Inspector of Road®, accompanied by Mr Opier, County Engineer, visited the. district' this-week.. , ..
It has been found necessary to de-foot-bridge across Jackson's ra-eek, owing to " the f&t thit the foundations to the bridge were doing considerable damage to the road. The bridge had been closed for some time previously. ! i , > Mr M. J. McGregor and, Miss McGregor, of Hikorangi, returned on Thursday from the north, where they have been - "doing" the hot lakes. Mr Mcregor wrt on a health-necruiting and returned feeling much benefited by the baths and waters.
