"LIVE AND LET LIVE."

A WORKER'S COMPLAINT. A correspondent signing himself "Live and Let Live" writes as follows to the Wairarapa Age ': —"I happen to. be one of a number who are out of work at present in Master ton. Consequently, time hangs heavily on my ; hands v .. So I .decided one . morning last week to : talie -a walls through the Park to-break the monbtony- r when my. attention was- drawn by continuous echoes of axes, which indicated that someone was making an onslaught on the Park trees. Proceeding in the direction in which the sound came, I found two men busily engaged felling, cutting up, and clearing a number of trees. As the result of my inquisitiveriess, I learned that those two men were stokers, who are permanently employed in our local municipal gas- ' works, also the work they were engaged in was a contract. I understand, with one of our loeal bodies. From what I can gather, those two men are at times engaged on night duty, and fill in a good portion of their time at this contract work. Now, I Sir, would you consider it - fair to ) those who are out of work that men. who are in receipt of a good wage and are fully employed should be allowed to come into competition with those j who, through unfortunate circuriistances, are in need of whatever work of this description our local bodies might from time to time,.have? We hear a good deal from Labour advocates about Exploitation; but this instance- clearly .shows that .workers themselves do not miss the chance of exploiting each other when tho opportunity arises. However, lot us hope that on future occasions when there is any work doing our Bprough Councillors a.nd trustees of local bodies will see tnat those who dosice it gets it. and put an end to any man monopolising two. jobs at . a time, while otners who are able and willing to work walk about and look at them!
