SLY-GROGGING IN MASTERTON.
A SERIOUS CHARGE.
. . .In the course of a. letter to .the CarterfXm "Neva," a correspondent , shielding himself under the nom de plume of ' 'Fairplay," makes the astounding istateafieait that- "men i in business in are afraid, to give their opinion', as they might ; offend their No-lioeiise customers." ' He further states that Mastenton "reeks with those den® (meaning sly-groggeries), and the police are ■powerless to stamp them out." A • representative of the Age .sought the , opinion, of Sergeant Miller concern, ing the alleged "dens." "It's all humbug," said the Sergeant. "There . are fewer isly-groig ishops ini Mastertton to-day than v there ever were "" under No-license. There may be a few droppers, and I have heard peo- ; . _ple say "that they can huy liquor. t But it is all nonsense to say that the' town reeks with sly-groggeries." The , Sergeant proceeded to iname a nnm- . her of those vrho have been suspected , of sly-grogging, , and who had left the town on, Ibeing warned. Others, lie thoughi, .would be leaving before . long, «« the trisk was becoiaaiig>too great.
