A London cable, received last night,, -stated that Viscount Kitchener will sail for Egypt in September.
\ The Acting-Prime Minister left Wellington yesterday to attend a Maori gathering at Waahi. Mr B. R. Hogg, of the Martinborough branch of the Union Bank, ■has been transferred to Wellington.
Mr James Halligan, Stock Inspector at Stratford, and formerly of Masterknj, has been appointed to the head office .staff in Wellington. Mr A. Snowball has resigned his position^as Secretary of tQie Y.M.G.A. in Masterton. The resignation will take effect in three months' time. Mr G'. R. Sykcs paid a visit to Eketahima yesterday, and received -gratifying assurances of support in /his candidature for Parliament. Mr A. W. Hogg, M.P., is expected to return to Masterton to-day from' Rotorua, vliers hq has been on a health-recruiting trip. Mr Walter Wright, at present dairy produce grader in charge at Patea, lias been appointed Inspector of NewZealand dairy produce .in London. Mr 6. H. York, caretaker of the Public Schools, will resume his duties on Monday next. He has been laid up for the past five weeks as the result •of an accident to his leg.
Mr W. Gray, M.A., Principal of the Wellington Training College, arrived in Masterton yesterday, and returns to Wellington "this morning.
Mr Joseph Cresswell, solicitor, of Napier, whose serious illness was reported in yesterday's is dead, at the age of fifty-one. Thei deceased, who was a native of Victoria, was educated -at Wesley College, Melbourne.
Mr Fred Jagerhorn, who has been •enrolling offieor for the electoral census "for tbo townships of .Ekelahuna and Newman, has completed his work, and brought his returns to Masterton yesterday. A resident of the Ma' terton district recently received a letter from Mr 8. Begg, the weli-known London artist. It may hot be generally known that Mr Begg is a native of New Zealand, and that he was a cadet in the Public Works Department when the road J through the Forty-Mile Bush was lai 3 ■off..' The news of the death in Wellington : on Thursday of Mrs Paterson, wife of the Rev. James Paterson, the wellknown Presbyterian pastor, was re- 1 ceived by her numerous friends in • Masterton with very great regret. The deceased lady, who was a native of Castle Douglas, Scotland, arrived tit Wellington with her husband 'n 1868. She was in'her sixty-fifth year at the time of her death. Our Fernridge correspondent writes: A most enjoyable dance was given by Mrs C. Carlson on Thursday evening, "in the Kaituna factory, in honour of the coming of age of her daughter , Miss Minnio Carlson. There was a vety large attendance from the Fernridge and also a number from Masterton. Dancing was kept up till the small hours of the morning, and a very pleasant time was spent. The death occurred at Greytowu yesterday morning of Mrs . Edward Kempton. The deceased lady, who 'lad been ailing,for some time past, -was ibotit 50 years of age. -She leaves a. husband .and ' two daughters (Mrs Alf. Madsen, of Greytown, and . Miss ®uby''Keinptcin)' ;t» mbnrntheir loss. TChe funeral will take place on Monday afternoon. Miss.Ava Symons (Hastings), a young lady who has shown much promise as a violinist, is at present on a - visit to Masterton. At the last musical competitions in Auckland and Napier she was first in each competition for violin solo. Mr Hugo Gorlitz, who arranged the tour of the Sheffield Ghoir through the Dominion, on hearing a performance of the young lady's in Hastings, pronounced her abilities as a performer in terms of the highest praise, and engaged her as one of the first fiddles for the orchestra. Mi.5S Symons has just arrived from Dunedin, where she left the Sheffield Choir. She speaks highly of , Dr. Harriss's kindness and thoughtfulness to the members'while on tour. Miss Symons will shortly leave for Germany, where ishe intends to pursue her studies at the- Leipsic Conservatiore.
