POLICE SERGEANTS
WELLINGTON, Last Night. It has teen definitely decided to abolish the rank of station sergeants in the police force, and to substitute the rank of senior sergeant. The four present station sergeants, Sergeant King (Dunedin), Sergeant Johnston (Christclmrch), Sergeant Darby (Wellington), and Sergeant Treanor (Auckland) will in future bp senior sergeants, and the following have been promoted to the same rank : —Sergts. Stagpoole (Oamaru), Bourke (Wanganui), Huddrell (New Plymouth). Fouhy (Ashburton), Remer (Sydenham), Mackinnon (Waihi). Ryan (Lyttelton). Ruthledge (Mt. Cook). Mathieson (Wellington South), and Dart (New Plymouth).
AUCKLAND MURDER CASE
AUCKLAND, Last Night
In the charge of murder again,'.t four, persons accused of • the death of Elsio Holland, at King-land, the Magistrate to-day heard argument on the subject of bail. The Crown Prosecutor objected Absolutely to any bail in +he cises of Mrs O'Shaughnessy and Mr § Hartley. The Magistrate decliti~ed to grant bail to any of the accused.
THE LICENSING ACT. GORE, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court Henry Baldwin was fined £SO for selling liquor on Coronation Day, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon for keeping liquor for sale. John Whittingham, brewer, Gore, was charged on three information s with felling beer from a depot at Riversdale for delivery at Gore, a No-License district, and failure to notify the Clerk of the Court of such sales. He was convicted and fined £5 on each information, and one guinea costs. He was also fined £2 on each of the three informations of failing -to enter sales in his books, with costs one guinea.
AN AUCKLAND ROBBERY
. WELLINGTON, Last Night. Information arrived by the Aorangi from San .FranCisco to-day in connection with the arrest of two persons in San Francisco, charged with robbery at Kohn's jewellery shop in Auckland. The New Zealand" eon-' stable who went over to bring the- accused back is still in San Francisco. ind when the mail left was likely to be compelled to go to Washington to bring the persons for whose extradi-s tion he went to the United States.
A STATEMENT CORRECTED. NELSON, Last Night. 1 With reference to a Sydney cable stating that Sir John Kirk, director of the Ragged Schools Union, was coming to New Zealand with a view to placing a number of boys in employment, the Rev. J. H. Mackenzie, the New Zealand representative of (the Union, states that the object, of Mr Kirk's visit is erroneously -stated. The Union was not an emigration organisation, and Mr Kirk comes to list sympathy and help for its efforts among the poor children of London.
SHOOTING FATALITY. DUNEDIN, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred this evening, when. Alex. Cunningham, thirteen years of age, was accidentally shot dead. The boy was playing in a neighbour's yard with-two mates at a game of American cowboys. Deceased had a Winchester rifle, which he knew to be loaded. He was about to enter a hut, but before doing so he threw the rifle on the ground. The concussion caused, the charge to exthe hujlet entering deceased's head just behind the right ear. He died within a few minutes.
