MR HOGG'S INCONSISTENCY.

[To The Editor. ] Sir, — I was highly amused this morning, while reading 'Mr Hogg's political statement to an Auckland pressman. Takei, for instance, the strictures he casts upon the Government re their lack of energy in pushing upon the market State coal for the benefit of the workers and others. Now, there is l one little question I would like Mr Hogg to answer, and that ds: When the people of Masterton and the Borough Councillor® were strongly urging the Government to establish a State Coal depot im Mastertbn, did he not do all in hi® power to block it,Jby writing to the Borough Council to the effect that after various trials had been onade of State coal it was found that it was neither good for household purposes nor for gas-making? I am more than astonished that Mr Hogg did not give the Auckland reporter a lengthy resume of the way he so energetically put thousands of now prosperous settlers upon the waste and Native lands of his electorate. Mr Hogg, I think, must have some motive for not tickling the ears of the Auckland people, who ore avowedly alive to the benefits of closer settlement. Perhaps Mr Hogg has a, fear that if he made known to the Auckland people his uiiequalled' energy ,dn the matter of closer jserttlement, they would never let him contest' the Masterion seat.— T ami, etc.,..,..'.. ~.,..., , ' ~ One of His Prosperous Settlers.
