THE COMPETITIONS.
The inaugural competition's in connection with the Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society are to be brought to a close with a monster demonstration in the Town Hall to-night. The contests themselves, which concluded last evening, have .been eminently isiucoessful. They have had the effect of stimulating interest in musical and literary matters', ,and have created, a spirit of enmlation which cannot fail \bo be a benefit to the community. The promoters of the Society 'are deserving of warm commendation for the emifchusiasm they have thrown irato the project, and the resolution with which tihey have faced the financial as well as tlie (managerial responsibility. The public'has been quick to realise the Value of the Society to the town, and the generous support extended the competitions (baa assured the permanency of the institution. - Many lilttie mistakes' have doubtless been made on the present occasion, but these will-(be avoided in future competitions), and the community will look forward with pleasurable anticipation to )the next festival.
