I ENGINEER'S REPORT. Tho following report of the Engineer (Mr 1). McLachlan) was read at th?. meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday : —■ OPAKI RIDING Railway Road. —Contract No. 2ot"> •. 64 chains of formation and 10 chains of metalling. Tho weather lias been unfavourable for making much progress on this contract. Since- my last report four chains of metalling have been done and some culveting put in position, giving access to the railway station. Upper Plain Road. —Contract No. 263: 43 chains of sidewidth formation and footpath. The contractor commenced work on the above last week. * Some metal repairs to the weaker portions of tho Upper Plain and Fernridge Roads are being executed. Waingawa to Camp Road.—The protective works necessary at the Ruamahanga bridge approach have been carried out. Northern approach.—Contract No. 237 : Bridge building.—Very little has been done on the above work, during the past month, owing to the non-de-livery of timber; the timber, I understand is in the course of transit and some of it coming to hand. ContraoFNo. 238: 26 chains of formation, etc.—Good progress lias been made with this contract during the past month. The excavation, reducing the grade on tho cuttings, lias nearly been completed. With ths Chairman's consent I approached Mr Macara with the object of acquiring the small piece of land to improve the acute corner at the Te [ Ore Ore and Opaki Road Junction. Mr Macara generously agreed to give tho Council 10ft at the acute point on a curve either way. This will greatly improve the sharp and dangerous turn. Mr Hirschberg lias been good enough to give a similar concession on the posite corner, which will be much ap- j predated. Kiriwakapapa Road.—(Govt. Gnt.): —The Roads Department have agreed to the proposal of extending the 12ft \ formation 17 chains, more or less. I propose calling tenders immediately for the work. TE WHITI RIDING Mefcal repairs 'have been effected to the Manaia, Gladstone, and South } Roads. Waingawa protective works. —The extension of the groyne, mentioned in last month's report, has been carried out. Te Ore Ore Estate roads.—An unformed length on Messrs Percy Bros, and McLauchlan's frontage has been ploughed and formed with the grader. RANGITUMAU RIDING.— Bluff to Rangitumau Road.—Contract No. 261: Delivering 285 cub. yds. i of metal for repairs is completed with 66 cub. yds extra. An extra culvert has been put in on the road leading to Mr Blatchford's. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road.—Contract No: 262: Delivering 395 cub. yds of metal. About half the work has been accomplished. Watertable repairs have been effected to the Kaka-amu and Northcroft's roads. WAINUIORU RIDING.— The roadman on the BlairlogieLangdale section complains of the damage done by cattle and horses straying on the road, and asks the Council's authority to impound. ' UPPER TAUERU RIDING.— Glendonald-Wairere Road.—(Govt. Gnt.) Contract No. 250: 68 chains of formation. The contractor reports j making fair progress. I regret that I have been unaole to make my usual periodical inspections,. owing to my being confined to the house for the past three weeks as a result of a chill. I expect to be able vo { resume outside work within the next | week. I
