(From Our Own Correspondents.} CARTERTON. The local branch of the Wairarapa Egg Circle is this week paying out olose on £3O for tflie past month's supply of eggs. The Hon. T. Mackenzie arrived in Carterton yesterday morning, to be present at a Liberal social at Dalefield laist evening. He was met at | the railway station by the Mayor j (Mr F. Feist), and Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., and a munbcr of citizens. Later a deputation was introduced to him, drawing his attention to the unsatisfactory railway service, and the inconvenience ca.used by not having a resident Magistrate in the district. An electoral census for the district J is at present being taken. ! A movement is afoot to revive in- j terest in the St. John Ambulance Asr satiation, and a meeting is to be held this evening for the purpose of forming an ambulance class. In the Police Court yesterday, a young mam named Patrick Sullivan was sentenced to a month's imprisonment on a charge- of being drunk and disorderly. Accused, who had previous convictions against him, in a drunken state went fumbling around the doors of a private residence in High Street, greatly alarming the lady inmates. The Carterton centre of the Wairarapa Boxing Association have arranged to hold a tourney on Thursday, July 20th. A splendid programme has been arranged, three round bouts 'being contested in heavy weights, light weights, welters, bantams, and •feather weights. A Parliamentary election in eon-ne-otum. with the 'Carterton Literary and Debating Society is to take place on, Monday evening next.. So far ■two candidates have been nominated', one being on the Independent Labour ticket, and the other an Independent Liberal. At the ordinary fortnightly meeting of Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., on ■Monday evening, Bros. McKenzie,, Smith,"and Nicholls were appointed a committee to report' at_ the nextmeeting on the advisability of forming a Royal Arch Chapter. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court takes place at Carterton to-mor-row. HASTWELL. A plain and fancv dress ball -was held at Bjastwell on Friday last, to celebrate the opening of the new hall. About sixty couples wore present, including people from ail parts of the Forty-Mile. Bush. After a brief .speech", the chairman (Mr 0. Isakson) declared the hall opened, and after the "Grand March" had been gone through dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning. Excellent music was supplied by the Hastwell orchestra and Brass Sand, extras being kindly played by Messrs. Jensen. Gray, Eagle, Miss' Franklin, and Miss Thorby. The committee also deserve a word of praise for the capable manner in which they carried, out their duties. Duiiing the evening Mr A. H. Herbert (of Eketahnna) in a short speech, congratulated the settlers, of Hastwell upon having erected such a fine, .commodious building, and also upon, tire liberal way they had contributed towards the hall fund.
