BARQUE WRECKED
BOUND FROM WESTPORT WITH GOAL. THE CREW SAVED. (Received Last Night, 9.40 o'clock.) SYDNEY, July 1. The barque Hjordis, formerly the Nairnshire, bound from Westport to Ponape with thirteen hundred tons of coal, was driven ashore on a reef off the island of Ponape on June 3rd. Within two hours the barque was a complete wreck. The captain arid crew, numbering fourteen, were saved. The barque had made a, record passage of thirty one days. There was no pilot or tug to assist her through a dangerous pas^ge. The wind fell, and the current z':nt her ashore. Soon afterwards the wind sprang up ,and bumped her bottom out. Next day the barque almost capsized, and was-then abandoned. The crew waited at Ponape for eight days before they were picked up by the steamer Germonia and brought to Sydney. The captain states that he waited outside for days, signalling for a tug, and not ccring to enter owing to the proximity of numerous reefs. Then a whaleboat from the island informed him he would have to negotiate the passage himself.
