WAIRARAPA BOXING ASSOCIATION

MAStiRTON CLUB'S TOURNAMENT. '; The.opening, tournament of the■■ season in connection with the Masterton Boxing Club was held in the Town HaJ last evening. There was a very large attendance- of enthusiasts, the stage, in particular, being crowded. ' ' Mr A. P.. Whatman',.President of the Club, stated that the programme to be presented would be one of the i best ever submitted in the Wairarapa. The last season had been a most successful. Cue, which was chiefly due to the enthusiasm of the pugilists and the support of the. public. Mr Whatman referred to the progress which, had been made by the f sport in the district, and specially thanked the Carterton public for the graceful support they had extended. He is-toted that the referee (Dr McLean) had come to Masterton at some personal inconvenience, and he (Mr Whatman) asked the public to support hion in his task by refraining from demonstration durI ing the progress ,of the events. Lawrence, of Carterton.- The former is 12st 101b, and the latter 12st lib. The first round, was fairly willing, Sievers (being the aggressor, and putting in some good work. Neither sustained much damage. ' > In the second round Sievers again forced the pace, though Lawence got; in. one or two effective face smashes. The third round was lively, .Sievers innv&ting several crushing blows on Lawrence's face. In the fourth:' round, Lawrence livened up considerably, and got in several effective blows. Reid (OaiterI ton), ihere was a difference of only one pound in the weights, which was in favour of Cadwal'lader. The first round consisted chiefly of sparring. The second round was more willing, Reid getting in several good blows. In the third round, both men fought gamely, and well, Reid having, if anything, the best of it. The fourth round produced some good ope-' bosn'ng, in i which Cadwallader made several good body blows, and forced the position. In the final round Cadwalkder made the fighting, and frequent- | ly found tive face of his opponent, who showed that he was not in the, best of conditaon.
