FOOTBALL NOTES.

(By ''Shin.pad. s ') Most people expected that the Gladstone seniors would give the Red Star seniors a great run last Saturday, hut very few anticipated that the latter would suffer a defeat. The defeat of Red Star has made tihe competition, perhaps, 6icfi.ll more interesting. Carterton, Red Star, and Gladstone have 9, 8, and 7 points respectively, so that each team has a chance of coining out on top. Personally, 1 would like to see Red Star win the championship, for dt is many season's since a Masterton team held the honour. Red Star will meet Gladstone again on Saturday, this being the first match '■ of the third round. A more suitable ground will be provided, and each team will be given a better chance of showinig their ability. Tho Cartcirton senior .team has not degenerated this season-, but the Red Star seniors have made a great improvement, which accounts for their having defeated' the dark maroons in the second round. The Ma&tertoit Club is to be congratulated upon the senior team it has been able to put in. the competition. Although they have not won a match yet, no team lias been able to register a big score against them. The players' are, practically without exception, all young, and it is fairly safe to anticipate that .the Masterton Club's .senior team (next year will be able to hold its own in. a credit- I abie miamner against the old estab- j ! lished clubs.. > , There is probability that ' laiberals and Dalefield will have a great go for the junior championship this' .season.. Masterton juniors would have had a very strong team in this yiear had the Club not' decided to enter a senior team. ,The Red Star thirds are now well on the way to winning the honours t •in .their grade. i A certain hockey referees' associa- ] tioai has decided to compel every ref- i eree to pass an- examination before j he is permitted to control a match. If a similar method were adopted by I the Wiarirarapa Rugby Referees' Association a great improvement would be eifected. The "Waiirarapa Rugby Union has l granted the transfer ,of H. Goodin. (Dalefield) from junior to third-class, and that of G-. Wallis from Dalefield thirds to Carterton thirds, subject to his being a financial member of the Dalefield Club. The Ma&tertan thirds, deserve the highest praise'' for defeating the heavy Gireytown team on Saturday last. The Greytown, thirds are heavy enough for a junior team., but they did not show the same skill as tbJedr light opponents.
