COUNTY COUNCILS.

CASTLEPOLNT. The ordinary meeting of the Castlepoint County Council was held in the County Office, Tinui, on Saturday, the 24th inst., there being present: Crs. H. H. S. Ryder (Chairman), J. C. The Public Works Department wrote, enclosing a copy of the Proclamation taking land for a road and ' closing a road through Blocks XIII **, and Aohanga Survey District, and Blocks 1., 11., IV., and V., Castlepoint Survey District. , A letter was received from the Stratford County Council inviting the co-operation of the Council in endeavouring to obtain from the Minister for Railways a repeal of the charge of "rate and a half" on imported hardwood' timber where used by County Councils for bridges and culverts. The Council resolved to forward a resolution to that effect. I From the Masterton Chamber of * Commerce, requesting Councillors to interest themselves in obtaining the , signatures of settlers to a petition in favour of the deviation of the railway lino to avoid the Rimutaka incline. From th«j Council's solicitor, advising that the claim of -the Trustees of the late clerk for compensation under the Workers' Compensation Act, 1908, would be heard before the Supreme Court at Wellington, on the 28th inst., and that it was necessary that the Council should be represented on i the occasion. i The striking of the next annual rate was held over for a full attendance of Councillors. In reply to the invitation from the Public Works Department, it was decided to make application for grants for the following roads:—Tinui-Pako-wai, £500; Tinui-Alfredton, £500; Masterton-Waimata, £300; Castle-point-Whakataki, £400; Tinui Valley, £100; Tinui-Manawa, £2OO. 'As rates were reported to be out- . standing to the extent of upwards of '££6o, it wa* decided to take legal proceedings against the defaulters.
