I The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture, was in Dannevirke yes- | terday. An Adelaide records the death of Mr 'William Strawbridge, the State Surveyor-General. Mr Robert C. L.' Reay, a wellknown surveyor in the Auckland district in the early days of the Maori war, died in the Wairoa hospital on Saturday morning, aged 72 years. Mr A. Matthews,, of the Wairarapa, has been elected President of the New Zealand Romney Breeders' Association. The death is announced of Mr A. C. Lean, an old resident of Hastings, from valvular disease of the heart. The deceased was about fifty-six years of age. He was a son of the late Colonel Lean, of Christchurch. Mr Claude H. Haigh, advance representative. of the "Scarlet Troubadours," arrived in Masterton on Saturday to make arrangements for the appearance of his Company here on July sth. His Lorelship Bishop Sprott held a confirmation sen-ice at Carterton on Sunday exening, when seventy candidates presented themselves. Miss Thelma Peterson, of the Wairarapa, had a (great reception at Dannevirke, when she sang at the Orchestral Society's concert. Mr R. V. Thompson, who is in the employ of Mr J. L. Murray, of Masterton, has received the appointment of head of the clothing and mercery department in Messrs George -and Kersley's establishment at Wanganui. An illuminated, address is to be presented at Levin shortly to Mr W. H. Field, M.P., in recognition of his pub-, lie services to the districthe/' reprepresentation will: probably be'made to Mrs-Field at the same time.
The Hawke's Bay Tribune understands that a strong effort is to be made to persuade Mr A. L. D. Fraser to stand for the Hawke's Bay seat, and he will be approached with that obj'Mjt when he has quite recovered from his indisposition.
Mr H. R. Elder, formerly, of the Masterton district, but now of Waikanae, has been nominated for another term as representative of the HuttHorowhemia district on the Wellington Education Board. Prior to their departure from Ashburton for Masterton, Mr and Mrs W. J. P. Hodgkins were given a hearty About sixty persons assembled in the* Commercial Hotel for the purpose of,. bidding them good T bye. • The Mayor • (MrH. .Davis), Rev. E. Whitebouse, Messrs Hugo er; J. F. Dignan, C. W. Nicoll, W. Nosworthy, M.P., G. W, Seymour and M. G. C. Pasco spoke of the admirable qualities of Mr and Mrs Hodgkins, and the regret that was felt at bis departure. The Mayor presented Mr Hodgkins. on behalf of the subscribers, ii,eluding the Ashburton Racing Club as a body, with a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed; and Mrs Hodgkins with a costly solid silver cake ba.sket. On behalf of St. Stephen's Ladies' Guild, the Rev. E. Wlutehouse presented Mrs Hodgkins with a manicure set. and. in doing so. Mr Whitehouse said tho members of the Guild particularly regretted losing such a valuable member as Mrs Hodgkins. Mr Hodgkins returned thanks in appropriate terms, and the gathering broke up with the singing of "He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and cheers.
