CHESS.

WAIRARAPA'S FINAL MATCH. The Wairarapa chess-players play- ■ ed the last of the four -matches on their Wellington programme, viz., that against the South Wellington Chess Club, on Friday evening. In this contest several friendships were renewed, the South Wellington j Club's visit to Masterton in September last having led to the arranging of the very successful Wairarapa tour, just concluded. Those who _ remember how handsomely the Wairarapa men defeated a strong Welling- , ton team of two dozen players at MJas'terton five years ago consider that on the present occasion they have not played up to form, and that towards the close of their tour they have given evidences of being a bit stale .from the hard battles fought earlier in the week. It is certainly .strange that the visitors, after scoring a majority of wins at the first eiglut boards against the strong Wellington Club's team—4£ to 3-£—-could only tally two wins and. six losses- at the same boards against the South Wellington, team last evening, when, as on© player put it, a "rot set in," tlho result beinig that South .Wellington's raiargin 'was the largest scored against the Visitors. The interest in last night's match . was shown by the fact that a goodly number of the players kept the scores of their game®. The visiting team was slightly re-arranged, the five Rummers playing at consecutive boards in the final .match. At tho death they were not divided. At the adjournment for refreshments the visiting captain voiced the thanks of his team (for the kindnesses shown by the various city clubs. Although Dame Fortune has not smiled on the visitors, they have thoroughly enjoyed their programme, tho results of which are ais follow : 20th June—Wairarapa 3£ wins, Working Men's Club 5£ wins. 21st Juno Wairarapa 4£- wins, Wellington CO. 7| wins. 1 22nd June—Wairarapa 4J- wins, Ril--1 birnie C.C. 6J wins. 1 23rd June—Wairarapa 3 wins, South Wellington- C.C. 8 wins. Previous efforts to return Wellington's visit referred to above have failed, and, therefore, the visitorsare pleased that a tour has been successfully arranged, feeling that I "its much better to have fought and lost than never to have fought at all." * The full isoore of Friday evening's match is as follows: WAIRARAPA. Guild 0 W. Rummer 0 P. Rummer 0 F. Rummer, 1, W. N. Rummer 0 G. Rummer 0 Moore. 0 Dagg • 1 T. J. linoropson 1 Venuell 0 Taylor 0 Total 3 SOUTH WELLINGTON.
