THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
MR J. G. HARKNESS' OPINIONS. (By Our Special Reporter.) At the annual. meeting of the National Dairy Association, held at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr J. G. Hartal ess, who has just returned from a trip to the Old Country, gave- a very interesting address, covering his experiences in connection with the handling of and dealing with New Zealand produce at the London end. Going home on the boat he was afforded facilities by the Shipping Company of taking numerous records of the temperature at which New Zealand butter and cheese is carried. At the London end he personally inspected the discharging of New Zealand dairy produos from both lines - of steamers, and the manner in wliicih it is sent on to the distributing centres. The speaker pointed out the great changes, wihich luad occurred in the produce world during the past ten years, and which were still continuing. The quality of produce as arriving in London was excellent, but there was still room for improvement. He reviewed the prices obtained for butter and cheese during the last season. Butter was not as good a price as it was hoped for, which was mostly due to increasing reports from Australia and Siberia. The reports from Siberia during the past season -showed an increase of'7o ,per cent, on the previous year, whilst Australia showed an increa.se of 50 pei- cent. He thoroughly approved of the decision of the Government to send Home an expert to examine and report on produce as it arrived. Another matter which would have a beneficial effect would be the establishment of laboratories with properly qualified chemists to test scientifioallv our manufactures of butter and .cheese.
