DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.'

KAIPARORO.

. The first, snow of the season fell during the early part of .the week, arid the bush hills were well covered with a white mantle, which, however, quickly disappeared when, old Sol made his welcome appearance. Several of the heaviest frosts, experienced here for years, have einco visited us—the indoor temperature failing ias low as; 29 degrees. Ihe cold nights have been succeeded ) y .bright, sunny days, which have amply atoned for the discomforts or the early mornings. Another attempt is to be .made to secure a grant for a bridge over the Makakahi River, and as both the Eketahiina and the Afaik-n'ovule Counties are taking the matter up —the bridge being on the boundary between the two counties—c-etfers are feeling hopeful as lo results. A 'bridge would ho a very great toon to people' on 'both sides of the liver, as considerable inconvenience ■ is caused .when. the river -is in flood. The local school closed for a fortnight's holiday on Friday last. Miss Feist, who lhas been acting as relieving assistant during the past two 5 months, has received an appointment elsewhere, and her place will he taken, after the vacation by the newly appointed assistant, Miss Burbush. Last- Saturday Mr and Mr® Parker entertained about forty guests at a progressive eurihre party, and a very pleasant time by all. The latter part of the evening was devoted to music.

The fortnightly dance, held in the Hall last Saturday night, wais, as usual, well patronised. From seven till eight a class was held for beginners, and quite a number of instructors put in an early appearance in order to help to train the uninitiated. Very sincere sympathy is felt in this district with Mr and Mrs. J. F. : Johansen, over the loss of their son Bert. Deceased was a specially bright boy, and a favourite with all who knew him. MAURICEVILLE WEST. Mr and Mrs Coombs and family left for Dianmeviirke this morning, where they will spend the Coronation holidays. The hall was packed to the doors on Friday night, when the school children rendered a well-selected programme, including chorus singing, duets, comics, recitation®, and instrumental items. The manner in which the children went through the whole (performance reflects much credit on their trainer, Miss Jensen, who lias giveai hours of hard work to have them in, trim for the occasion. Missi A. Forsberg presided at the piano. During an interval, the chairman, Mr J. P. Petersen, handed out the prizes to the proud little performers and scholars. The singing of "God Save tlhe King," and partaking of a hearty supper, brought tire concert to a dose. The floor was theai cleared for dancing. As a result, after paying for .prizes, etc., the funds have 'been increased by mearly £3, which must ibe considered very satisfactory. Mr P. Mortensen. intends erecting a new, up-to-date residence on his property here. Mr C. Mascelle has received 'news from Sydney that his mother is lying dangerously ill. Mr Mascelle leaves for Sydney on Friday next. Three very severe frosts have followed the cold .storm of Wednesday last, cutting the grass down, rather badly. j
