, WELLINGTON, Last Night/' The Town Hall was crowded tonight, when a public demonstration in favour of the principles of the N.Z. Alliance was held. Mr Wesley Spraggj, President of the N.Z. Alliance, presided, and addresses were delivered iby Lieut.-Colonel Birkenshaw, Miss Anderson Hughes, Rev. L. M. Isitt, Mr A. S. Adams, Rev. J. Dawson, and Mrs Barton, an ex- , member of the Glasgow City Council. Mr Isitt .said the gathering cekv bra.ted the silver weddia gof the N.Z. Alliance. This movement had bound together all the temperance activity of the country, and the party had kept united all the time.. It was never .better welded than new, and! memibara of the party were never more convinced of the logic of their case.
An appeal for hmds resulted in the collection of £32 16s.
The following resolution wa& carried : ' 'This meeting, recognising that women are m»sb deeply interested in the question of the prohibition of the liquor traffic, rejoices to learn of the movement to organise a. Women's Orusade in connection with; the coming campaign, arid the women present voting for this resolution] promise to join the Orusade aad to. do all in their power to forward its objects and carry both local Nolicense, and National Prohibition at the polls in November next." STRANDED BARQUENTINE. WANGANUI, Last Night. The barquentine Pelotus, which went ashore on Monday night, remains in the same position on the beach. The vessel is full of water, but the extent of the damage cannot be ascertained till the weather moderates. The captain and crew came ' ashore this afternoon.', Hopes are enterfeined for th¥«af«tw of lire vessel, which is loaded with iroabark sleepers.
