MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
I The monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council was held yesterday, there being present Councillors W J. Welch (Chairman), D. W. Foreman, J. Miller, J. Morns,.A. Murray, C. C. Eebbell, R. F. Beetham, and D. J. Cameron. Messrs C. Blake, J. J. Coradine, J. Whittaker and J. Tayforth petitioned the Council to have the six gates on the Kaituna road removed.—Cr. Cameron said he though the small settlers who had to pass through the gates had a substantial grievance. The road was used by settlers taking milk to the factory.—On the motion of Cr. Cameron it was decided that notice bo served upon the settlers interested that they might remove the gates within six months. The Chief Surveyor notified that the road at Longhill must be closed under /he Public Works Act. Mr J. Andrew asked for 23yds of metal delivered at the Black Creek bridge approaches.—The engineer .stated that the metal was provided, for in the specifications for the contract. —On the motion of Cr. Foreman, the matter was left in the hands of the engineer, to deal with as he thinks lit. .
The Secretary of the A.M.P, Society intimated that the Directors' did not see their way clear to permit the unexpended balance of the Opaki water supply loan being repaid to them now. Messrs Norling and Read asked permission to take their light traction engine and chaff-cutter to Alfred ton. —lt was pointed out that traction engines came under \,h.Q heavy traffic by-laws.—Cr. Kebbell stated that it would be a hardship to settlers if the chaff-cutting plant could not get in.— It was decided to inform Messrs Norling and Read that the Council has no power to grant the permission asked for.
Road Inspector Hardinge asked for a list of quarries used by contractors in the County.—Referred to the engineer. The Wellington Education Board asked the Council if it could see its way clear to retain the Lower Taueru ferry reserve for the.use of horses used by children attending school.-4-It was decided that the previous decision of the Council be adhered to. Messrs Jackson Bros, wrote, supplying the dimensions of jarrah timber , for use in telephone line constructed / on County roads. —The matter was referred to the Engineer for a report. The Eketahuna County Council "asked if this Council was willing to allow Eketahuna £ls as its share of T. R. Harding's license, as he would ; not be using his license again in the Masterton County.—Cr. Murray explained that the unexpired value of the license was only £lO. He moved that, if Mr Harding did not use the Masterton County roads during the remainder of the period, a sum of £lO be allowed to Eketahuna. Mr W. J. Rountree asked permission to erect a fence partly on the road J line leading to Mr Davis' property.— ) The letter was i-eceived. ..■ j The Lower Taueru School Committee asked that the ferry reserve be ! retained by the Council for the use of [ school children, ' I
Mr W. S. Short, Assistant UnderSecretary of the Public Works Department, forwarded a letter received from the Castlepoint County in reference to. the maintenance of the main road to Tinui. Complaint waß made by the Cas'tlepoint County at the" proposal to expend £l5O in providing a roadman's cottage. It was thought that £30,0r £4O should afford sufficient shelter for roadmen.—The sction of the clerk in supplying information to Mr Short was approved. The Commissioner of Crown Lands notified that the question of closing the road at Longhill deviation would receive consideration. The Chairman was authorised to affix the seal of the County to an agreement for the transfer of land from Judd Bros, to the Council. . The report of the meeting of the Finance Committee was read. The Treasurer reported a credit balance at date, of £1444 4s. The receipts for the month amounted to £959' lis 9d. Accounts amounting to £2313 0s lOd were recommended for payment. The question of complying with a request of Mr ,sohn Davis for assistance towards the'&>st of constructing a bridge to give access to the property; was left in the hands of Crs. Kebbell and Murray.—The report was adopted.
