CHINESE RESTRICTIONS.

The .protests which Chinese Consuls in Australia and New Zealand frequently make regarding the restrictions placed on their fellow-country-men do not meet with much sympathy from Mr Oliver Burgess, of the Chinese Inland Mission, who is at present in Auckland. Mr Burgess says that entrance into many of the western provinces of China is absolutely forbidden to all foreigners except missionaries, who are admitted chiefly on account of the medical knowledge which they possess. Foreign -tirade is completely excluded, and Europeans are not allowed even to ascend the upper reaches of the great rivers in their launches. On the other hand, the Chinese in Australasia are allowed a full measure of freedom once they have entered the country, and > are free to purchase land and engage in any trade or business they may prefer.
