Melvin .V&nrn *.--■. wlho associated with Waiter Wellman in the latter'is unsuccessful. attempt at a balloon flight, across the Atlantic, lias sailed for New York for the purpose of completing the construction of a dirigible 286 ft. long, at a cost .of £3ojooo, with which he proposes crossing the Atlantic in October. The dirigible will carry a crew of five. , t In an interview, Vaniman stated that rublbej'-«oated fabiics were so perfect that they would easily stay in the air for thirty days. The real difficulty would be in preventing the dirigible from rising to an extreme height, when the rays of the sun expanded the gas. He thought, however, that he had solved this difficulty.
