STATE CONTROL.
Somebody asked Mr A. H. Herbert, at the conclusion of liLb address in Masterton on Wednesday, if he was willing to submit the issue of State control of the liquor traffic to the people. Mr Herbert replied that he -was; but qualified his remark by 'saying that.he would not trust the present Administration with the control of the liquor. This, of course, is the crux of the whole question. Could any Government be trusted with the control of hotels? Would not one be just as likely as another to use them for political purposes? The question of State control of the liquor traffic is not within the range of practical politics. It has never been a success, and never will be while human nature is human nature.
