MR HERBERT'S SPEECH.
I Mr A. H.,Henbert, who opened his political campaign in Ma&terton- last evening, wa.s given a most encouraging reception. As a maiden effort, his speech was 'highly creditaJble, though, it lacked the element of coordination, which comes of experienced platform speaking. Mr Herbert made it clear that he is an .uncompromising opponent of the present Government, and he was most convincing in his criticism of its administration. Perhaps the■■ most striking feature of his address was his appeal to the .working classes. He declared .that, 'while he was an Oppositionist, 'he had no sympathy with the old Conservative school, and his desire was to see the condition of the worker and the small farmer ameliorated. He dealt trenchantly with the. .borrowing and taxation policy of the Government, and proclaimed himself a freeholder on (the land question, with a limitation, of area. The speech was delivered in a most' intelligent and fearless manner, and there is little doubt that Mr Herbert wall be a force to be (reckoned with in the coming .contest. At some future date we shall take the opportunity of criticising his policy at greater length.
