Mr C. R. Hod.ue, Registrar of the Adelaide University (brother of the Rev. A. Hodge, of Masterton), leaves on Thursday for an extended trip to England. Mr Hodge is an alert educationalist, and will take the opportunity to study the subject from the most advantageous points of view.
An Auckland telegram announces the death of Mr D. L. Murdoch, formerly General Manager of the Bank of New Zealand.
The death is announced from Wanganui of Mrs Anne Murray, widow of the late Mr Alexander Murray, at the age of 79 years. The deceased had been a resident of Wanganui for close upon, half a century. There passed away on Monday in the person of Mr John Hall one of Normanby's oldest and most respected residents, and a colonist of many years' standing. The late Mr Hall, who was born at Coventry, England, came out when very young with his parents in the ship Olympus, landing in Wellington early in 1842. A very old identity of the Dannevirke district passed away on Monday in the person of Mrs Brittain, at the advanced age of 97.
The Rev. T. H. Sprott Avas yesterday consecrated as Bishop of Wellington. An impressive service was held in St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral.
The sudden death is announced by cable of Baron Edric Gifford, V.C The deceased was born in 1849, and succeeded to the title in 1872. He received the Victoria Cross in the Ashanti War.
Mr Neville Halse, teller in the Carterton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, has received notice of his transfer to Sydney. He leaves Carterton on Friday next. His place at Carterton will be taken by Mr C. P. Bo wen, from Wellington.
The Hon. Geo. Fowlds will open the new ward at the Christchurch Hospital on June 15th.
The Hon. James Carroll, ActingPrime Minister, will be present at a social to be held by the Liberal party in Carterton on Monday next.
